Organic Search - What is it?

When you go to a search engine, for example Google, you type what you're looking for into the search box at the top. The engine then searches through its massive index of known web pages and hopefully returns the most relevant web pages. The results are presented in the middle of the page. These are called organic search results.

Noone and no company can buy the top listing. Users know this. And that's why they are deemed more relevant to your search and why on average, organic search engine results are 5 times more effective than the paid for results that are displayed at the very top and sides of the page.

Pay per click or PPC - what is it?

PPC stands for Pay Per Click advertising. Google, Bing and Yahoo! allow companies to bid on keywords. Their advert will then appear next to the organic search results for specific keywords.

All 3 engines display these sponsored adverts on the side and the top of the organic results. You've seen them a thousand times every time you search an engine. But you have probably only ever clicked one when you couldn't find what you were looking for in the organic search results.

Both of these methods of finding customers on the internet are two of the components that make up the term Search Engine Marketing or SEM. And if you want to be successful in attracting customers to make purchases on your website, SEM is a good place to start.

Advantages of Organic Search

Visitors are free - People that find your site through the organic search results don't cost you every time they click to get to your website.

You get more clicks - Many more people click on the organic search results than the Pay Per Click adverts.

Higher conversions - Most people realize that the adverts on the side and top are paid for. They naturally trust the results that appear in organic results. This trust converts clicks into customers. Think about how you search yourself.

Disadvantages of Organic Search

Ranking can take time - It can take months to get ranked on the first page of Google. Usually up to 3 months. However, if you are in a competitive industry for example, plumbing - it can take over 6 months of hard SEO.

It needs time and financial investment - You will need to spend a lot of time or pay quite a lot of money to get good organic rankings in Google, Yahoo! or Bing.

Advantages of Pay Per Click

Instant traffic - Once you've setup a PPC campaign, your adverts will start showing almost instantly.

Easy keyword monitoring - It's easy to monitor which keywords are bringing visitors to the website. And more importantly which keywords bring visitors who convert into customers. So you can spend your budget on the highest converting keywords.

It can be a money making machine - Work out your metrics. If you know that when you spend £1 on PPC you make £2, you can demonstrate a very clear Return on Investment. Pile in and buy as many clicks as you can!

Disadvantages of Pay Per Click

Each click costs money - You're paying for pay per click advertising, so obviously each click has an associated cost. This does allow you to set your budget however.

A highly converting website is key - When you're paying per click, it's essential that your website is optimised to turn those clicks into customers. And the most successful companies employ professional marketing companies to create the right kind of website that encourages people to buy. This is great - but it can cost a lot of money.
