Virus and spyware removal

A computer virus is a self-replicating program. It infects other computers and spreads through a network, the internet or email and can be carried on a removable medium such as a CD, DVD or USB stick. Although not technically correct, the term 'computer virus' is sometimes used to describe other types of malware such as computer worms, trojan horses, rootkits, spyware, adware and pop-ups.

A computer virus may damage your computer system's data and impair performance. The longer you operate with an infected computer, the higher the chance of data loss, file damage and passing the virus to others.

Symptoms of an infected computer

 Your connection to the internet is slow
 Windows alerts pop up with 'resources' issues
 Your computer often 'freezes'
 Your computer needs frequent reboots

Removing the computer virus

Our IT engineers have removed hundreds of viruses from computers. First, we'll run some anti-virus sofware to ascertain the problem. If this doesn't work, in the majority of cases we'll boot the operating system into Safe Mode and clean the Windows registry folder. Once that's completed an antivirus and spyware program can be run to remove any other infected files. This usually takes care of the problem.

System restore

If the virus still hasn't been removed and you're running a Windows operating system, we can use the System Restore tool, which restores the registry and critical system files to a previous point. Restore points from previous days should work provided the virus has not corrupted the restore files or also exists in previous restore points.

Reinstalling the operating system

Reinstalling the operating system is a radical approach to virus removal and used as a last resort. It involves either reformatting the computer's hard drive and installing the OS and all programs from original media, or restoring the entire partition with a clean backup image. The reinstall, reconfiguration and restoration of user preferences can make this task quite time consuming, but it is a very effective method for removing malware.
